Brochures or Flyers? What’s the Difference?

With decades of combined experience in the wholesale printing industry, we’ve noticed something: many folks don’t know the difference between brochures and flyers. Many marketers, designers, and advertisers tend to use the terms interchangeably.

But the fact is, the two formats are unique. Brochures and flyers each serve distinct marketing strategies, and offer unique benefits. This simple guide will give you an insight into what makes brochures and flyers unique – and how best to utilize each one in your marketing mix.

Flyers

Also commonly known as handbills, leaflets, or circulars, flyers are typically distributed by hand and are frequently used for short-lived promotions. Common applications include event announcements, information sheets, magazine inserts, and advertisements.

The key features of a flyer:

  • -        Flyers are one single sheet
  • -        Flyers are typically unfolded
  • -        Flyers may be printed on one or both sides
  • -        Flyers are generally used to convey short, concise and targeted information

Flyers generally have a shorter anticipated life span than most other printed formats. As they are handed out en masse, marketers and designers often rely on a lighter, economical stock.

Brochures

Brochures, on the other hand, are designed for more extended use. They’re typically produced as reference material for customers or employees. They may be used as a follow-up marketing piece to help close a sale, or as product reference material after a sale.

Some key features of a brochure include:

  • -        Brochures are always folded
  • -        Brochures are typically printed on both sides
  • -        Brochures may be constructed from a single sheet, or may include multiple sheets
  • -        Brochures are generally designed to convey more detailed information about a product, service, or topic

Since brochures are designed to be handled and kept for a longer period, they are usually printed on a more durable stock with a coating to help resist scuffs, moisture, and fading. It costs a bit more to produce brochures, so they’re usually used in a more selective way rather than for mass distribution.

Remember that unlike a booklet, a brochure is never bound. This is the feature that differentiates a multi-page brochure from a booklet.
